FL Return

Day 1 - Tampa to Baton Rouge, Louisana 734 miles 10 1/2 hours. We drove along the southern part of the States adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico. After Baton Rouge on the second day, we turned north of Baton Rouge, LA.

As we drove past Pensacola, FL. Lori got a smile on her face. We could sense a blessing on the land. We saw a dead armadillo on the road.

Sundogs – we thought they were only in the north

Crossing into Alabama

Coming into Mobile, Alabama major port city

Crossing into Mississippi.

We drove past Biloxi and Gulfport, Miss. There was a “sloughy” smell for miles. At a gas station a fellow had on a T-shirt that read – “Body Piercing by Smith and Wesson” with a picture of a large gun.
Getting close to Baton Rouge, Louisana. Note: the water between the lanes – lots and lots of water close to the Gulf.
DAY 2 - we toured around Baton Rouge and went through the old State Capitol Building. Quite enjoyed the city.
Wonderful hearty breakfast – Grits and raisins for meand Biscuits and Gravy for Lori Old State Capitol Building
Ceiling in Old State Capitol Bldg.
Beauty in beautiful BuildingTugboat pushing barge on ole muddy Mississippi. It has a large volume of cargo going through the port of Baton Rouge.
The bridge over it is long and riveted. At it’s widest the Mississippi is 1.6 miles wide (about 2.6 Km)
At Starbucks, Lori bought some Red Velvet Whoopie Pie.
Old tree
20 mile bridge on stilts crossing the Basin. Lots of water.
Some type of field – rice?Bayou
We weren’t sure what this fellow was doing – we thinking some kind of farming.
Again lots of trucks.
Flat land past the Bayou. Louisana appeared to be a “poor” state. We noted that a lot of gas stations had casinos attached.
Texas had a sign – “Do not mess with Texas” – then “littering fine $1000.00″
I still shudder when I see these pics – had a real hard time driving through Dallas/Fort Worth. So much traffic and so many lanes. It was rough :(
We went past Witcha Falls, Tx. We finished the day at Vernon, Texas. (700 miles – 10.5 hours)
DAY 3 – Early in the am, got pulled over by State Trooper for speeding – gave me a warning  (Thank-you, Jesus).
We saw this sign on quite a few billboards – Note: always important to read the fine print :)
Another signFlat prairie land – looked similar to southern AB or SASK, except for the red soil.White blossoms on trees in Memphis, Texas
Kept seeing white stuff in the fields – took a bit to realize it was left over cotton.

I had never seen cotton before. In my hand are the cotton seeds with left over cotton fiber after it has gone through the gin. (The cotton gin separates the cotton fiber from the seed, without damaging the seed.)

The Sonic fast food restaurant was common. This one has a cowboy and his horse in it :)
Also, you order the food via the phone on the table and they bring the food to a window for you to pick up – different.Lonely landscapeLots of scenes that looked familiar.
Extinct Volcano in New MexicoFirst view of Rockies
Neat sign
Castle Rock – lots of formations that looked similar.Going through Denver
End of Day 3 – stayed at Wheatland, Wyoming – (Travelled 783 miles – 12 1/4 hours driving time)
Day 4 - SunriseThe highlight for this day was seeing the antelope and deer. I estimate at least 300 antelope. They were off the highway and hard to see – but they were everywhere.
This one is deer.
This was at Kaycee, Wyoming, where if it was not off-season – we could have toured the buffalo museum or taken a trip to where the “Hole in the Wall Gang” had their hideout. (Remember Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid). Maybe next time – if there is a next time.Coming into Billings, Montana Lots of interesting cloud formations – can you see the polar bear?Lori liked the dapple on the hills.Lori likes trees :) Looking back on these pics – Remember we are still wearing our shorts- This sign makes me want to say – “You got to be kidding!”
After we got to Creston – we had to get to Fort McMurray to move the rest of our possessions to facilitate the sale of our home. Lori is consistent – wore her winter boots all the way to Florida and her summer crocs all the way to wintery Alberta :)
Total driving to Creston – 3100 miles – 44 hours
